GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Children and Family Minister at Saint Nicholas offers a unique opportunity for vocational discernment and ministry experience. The focus of the internship is to support the ministry needs of Saint Nicholas while also serving as a launching pad for the candidate to explore his or her vocation in the church and, if appropriate, begin preparing for the formal ordination process in the Episcopal Church. It contains three elements: (1) Vocational discernment, especially as it relates to church ministry, in a safe a supportive environment (2) Spiritual formation and independent theological study within the context of a healthy worshipping community and under the direction of the Priest in charge and (3) Practical ministry training that relies upon independent judgment and decision-making. The CFM will serve as a member of the Staff, working alongside the Priest in charge to help lead and support a reviving parish. the job is designed eventually to transition into long-term staff position or full-time pastoral residency.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attending to the Spiritual Formation of children and their families, including:
- Sunday morning worship and holistic catechesis
- Coordinating family lay-ministers (volunteers) and special events
- Befriending, supporting, and caring for parents with young children
- Inaugurating a path for children and families to deepen their faith as they grow in age
- Assisting in Sunday worship, special services, daily office, and lay eucharistic visits as assigned
- Assisting with in organizational meetings (staff, diocesan, and vestry meetings)
- Devoting regular hours for prayer, retreat, study, and spiritual direction, including:
- Routine meetings with a spiritual director
- Mentored readings in theology, ministry, and mission for further discussion
- Consistent observation, questioning, and debriefing of ministry activity
- Immersion in the rule and rhythms of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer
- Participating in the faith and life of Saint Nicholas Church as a faithful member
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal applicant:
- Exhibits a mature faith in Jesus Christ and genuine desire to grow under the care of others.
- Is willing to conform to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of the Episcopal Church
- Already demonstrates a desire to serve and care for children and families
- Has some ministry experience working or volunteering at church and is interested in ordination
- Has a college degree, or is in the process of completing it
- Possesses strong personal initiative, and enjoys working within the ambiguity of entrepreneurial environments and creating new things in collaboration with others
- Possesses strong interpersonal skills and enjoys engaging with all types of people
